- Today, we are living a critical time where the environmental pollution is so high that we are getting closer and closer to a point of not return. In order to grant not only the health and prosperity of living creatures of our world, but also, the sustainability of our planet, drastic measures must be applied. In this dissertation, I will address the 2050 targets for a low carbon economy, with the main focus on the road transport sector. As it is the sector were the most restrictions will be made,reaching as high as 95% reduction of emissions. Through analysing the targets proposed for 2050 and its milestones, along with the study of several articles available regarding a variety of sectors such as Battery Electric Vehicles, Power Plants, Motor companies, technology and so on, I was able to find that the pace in which we are moving towards lowering the emissions is too low. For that reason, I believe that, unless further measures such as completely forbidding the Internal Combustion Engine Vehicles, which some countries are starting to consider, the targets will not be achieved. Those restrictions are set to start in 2040, however, it may be too late. Furthermore, it is certain that both oil and motor companies will use their power to challenge these developments and restrictions. Most of the reductions rely on the hope that Battery Electric Vehicles will become widely accepted, yet, as it is shown in this paper, it is very far from reality. The market penetration is, and it is expected to continue to be, very low. Mainly due to the several limitations that those vehicles still have. For that reason, alternative solutions must be considered such as new ways to reduce traffic and congestion, or restricting the number of vehicles in the urban centres
